May 1    Annual May Breakfast
CHRIST CHURCH CHOIR TO HOLD ITS 96th MAY BREAKFAST
PROCEEDS BENEFIT MUSIC CAMP FOR CHILDREN OF CHOIR
AND CHORUS OF WESTERLY

Continuing one of Rhode Island’s oldest and most popular traditions,
the Choir of Christ Church, Westerly, invites the general public to join them at their 96th annual
May Breakfast on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 7 AM to 10 AM. This special breakfast
(which features a menu of  homemade buttermilk pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs made
to order, muffins, fruit, juice, coffee, and tea) will take place in the Christ Church
Parish Hall at 7 Elm Street in downtown Westerly.

The Christ Church Choir’s May Breakfast has been a tradition in Westerly for nearly
one hundred years. Over that time, countless numbers have passed through Christ
Church’s doors for what many consider a townwide celebration of springtime. Because
the event is sponsored by the renowned Christ Church Choir, proceeds from the breakfast
are directed towards the community’s singing culture. In particular, the May Breakfast helps
fund a special week-long music camp for the children of the choir and the children of the
Chorus of Westerly. This camp, held each August, is led by George Kent
(organist/choirmaster at Christ Church and music director at the Chorus of Westerly)
and is vital in teaching area children the importance of singing great works of music.
Since the summer camp program began over 50 years ago, more than 1,000 area
children have been able to attend the camp now held at Ogontz in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

For information on the May Breakfast, the annual Choir Camp week, the Christ Church
Choir, or the Chorus of Westerly, please contact Deborah Dunham at
401.348.9164. Photographs of previous May Breakfasts are available upon request.
Members of the media (including photographers) are welcomed to attend. Please alert
Deborah Dunham at the above number or the Christ Church Office (401.596.0197) if attending.

May 22 - May 23    Mystic Seaport Celebrates Opening of New Exhibit
Visiting tugboats, special activities and a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Connecticut State Senator Andrew Maynard will highlight TUGS! Blast at Mystic Seaport.
The weekend will celebrate the opening of TUGS!, the Museum’s newest exhibition that traces the past, present and future of the American tug, tow and barge industry. Designed for visitors of all ages, the exhibit features custom-created videos, stories, rare artifacts, historic images and large-scale graphics, hands-on activities, audio/visual elements and outdoor programming.
Mystic Seaport President Steve White and Senator Maynard will be joined by Connecticut State Representative Diana Urban; Karen Senich, executive director of Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism; Alex Agnew of Professional Mariner magazine and representatives from tugboat companies that have supported the exhibit in a  ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, May 22, at 12:45 p.m. The ceremony, which announces the grand opening of TUGS!, will take place outside of the Museum’s R.J.  Schaefer Exhibit Hall.
Visiting tugboats docked at Chubb’s Wharf throughout the weekend include Gwenmor Marina’s Gwendolyn, Thames Towing Services’ Adam and John Paul and private yachts North Star, Seahorse, Trilogy and Tuggly. Special events featured during TUGS! Blast include a marine engine and watercraft open house at the Museum’s Collections and Research Center, lectures exploring interesting tugs of yesterday and today, an exploratory talk of the TUGS! exhibit, marine engine demonstrations in the Museum’s Shipyard and radio-controlled tugboat demonstrations in the Museum’s new outdoor shallow pond.
Linda Gramatky Smith, daughter of Hardie Gramatky who authored and illustrated the children’s book, Little Toot, will give a reading of her father’s classic tugboat tale at the Children’s Museum Saturday, May 22, from 10:30 – 11 a.m. Gramatky Smith will additionally speak about her father and his accomplished career in her talk “Memories of Little Toot and My Father, Hardie Gramatky” at the Greenmanville Church Saturday, May 22, at 3 p.m.
Additionally, visitors can take part in a variety of hands-on activities throughout the weekend including a heaving-line toss, friendly games of tug-of-war and creating a tug craft. Children are invited to story time in the Children’s Museum and to build a wooden tugboat keepsake (nominal fee for toy boat workshop).
Funding for TUGS! has been made possible with a $149,136 grant awarded to Mystic Seaport from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Individual donations and in-kind support will additionally help fund the exhibit. With leadership support from American Waterway Operators, the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism, the Community Foundation of Southeastern Connecticut, the Dibner Family Foundation, G&H Towing, Professional Mariner, the Tugboat Enthusiast Society and an anonymous family foundation in hand, Mystic Seaport seeks to match the IMLS grant funds in total. Those interested in supporting the project can contact Chris Freeman at 860.912.3121 or at chris.freeman@mysticseaport.org.
            For more information, visit www.mysticseaport.org/tugsblast.
TUGS! will remain open through spring 2011.
Mystic Seaport is the nation’s leading maritime museum. Currently celebrating its 80th anniversary, the Museum features a re-created 19th-century seafaring village, tall ships, a working preservation shipyard, exhibits and a planetarium. Jun 5    Celebrate World Oceans Day at Mystic Aquarium
With climate change happening around the world, now more than ever it is important to understand the critical role oceans play in our everyday lives. Celebrate our ocean planet and learn simple ways you can make a difference during Mystic Aquarium’s World Oceans Day on Saturday, June 5.

With assistance from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and The Ocean Project, this year’s celebration honors the 50th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’ “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” book. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., kids will receive activity booklets related to the book, can participate in an ocean-themed spelling bee and will receive special prizes, such as bookmarks, pins or fake tattoos. Kids can also get their faces painted, color their very own fish crown and make an estuary in a bottle, which contains oil, water, food coloring and plastic fish to show how estuaries are formed.

Adults will learn about rain collection barrels and ways to halt the flow of pollutants to Long Island Sound during EnviroScape demonstrations. Aquarium staff will also share conservation-minded home improvement ideas and ways water can be reused and conserved. In the Marine Theater, guests can watch a special “Cat in the Hat”-themed sea lion show.

Jun 15    Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner & Auction
Citizen of the Year and Key Award to be Honored at Annual Dinner

Richard C. Holliday has been named the Greater Westerly- Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Holliday has served a variety of community organizations. He spent 24 years on the board of the Ocean Community YMCA, and in the late 1990s was elected board chairman. That term coincided with the completion of the last major expansion of the YMCA building. He now co-chairs the organization’s capital campaign with Paul Lynch, working to raise funds to renovate and reconfigure the Westerly branch.

He joined the Westerly Land Trust in 1998, served on that board for 10 years, and was instrumental in the Avondale Farm Preserve purchase. During his tenure, the land trust’s acquisitions grew from 45 acres to over 1,000 acres.

Holliday served on the board of the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association for 12 years, and was their treasurer.

He has served on the Westerly Hospital board since 2007, and has worked on numerous committees including Finance, Executive Compensation, Physician Recruitment Ad Hoc, Clinical Care, CHOW Advisory, and the Audit committees.

The Westerly Town Council appointed Holliday to the position of housing commissioner in the 1960s. He donated his time to that position for four years.

The Chamber also bestowed its Key Award on Frank Palaia, who has made extraordinary contributions of time and talent to help the chamber meet its mission over a span of many years.

Palaia leads the chamber’s AED program, which has raised thousands of dollars to distribute automatic electronic defibrillators to schools, fire departments and police departments throughout the community. He wrote the lengthy application materials to the state Department of Health to establish Westerly as the state’s first heart-safe community.

Serving on the chamber’s board for eight years, including a year as president, he has co-chaired the Duck Race and will cochair River Glow in 2010. He has served on the chamber’s Finance Committee, the Greater Westerly Chamber Foundation, Nominating Committee, and more.

The Key Award is not an annual award, but rather, one given when the board feels an individual has truly gone above and beyond the norm in his or her commitment to the chamber.

The event will include the annual chamber Great Escape Auction with over 150 auction items for sale at the event.

Aug 1    SoundMusic and Mystic Aquarium Announce Summer Collaboration
SoundMusic, the bold new venture that last summer brought two critically-acclaimed symphonic concerts and one very popular big band production to Harkness Memorial State Park, will present three performances this summer at one of southeastern Connecticut’s most cherished locations, Mystic Aquarium.

The season will open on Sunday, August 1 with a “Swing Dance Under the Stars” Gala Fundraiser, featuring the Cab Calloway Orchestra. “Ecstasy, Elegance, Elegy, Elvis,” a classical symphonic program featuring world-renowned harmonica virtuoso Robert Bonfiglio and members of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, will take place on Friday, August 13 and Saturday, August 14. These two performances will also feature SoundMusic’s Music Director and Maestro Martin Piecuch in a performance of Glazunov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone. Each performance begins at 8 p.m.

Retaining one of the largest parts of their appeal to the public, all three performances will occur outdoors, under the stars. Rather than being flanked by Long Island Sound, concert-goers will sit within view of the aquarium’s outdoor “Arctic Coast” exhibit, home to beluga whales.

“In this difficult economy, we found it prudent to scale back our productions while still maintaining the vision of returning to large events on Long Island Sound in future seasons,” said SoundMusic Executive Director Ron Murray. “We plan to repay every dollar we owe from our inaugural season in 2009. To do that, we must have a season. We are thrilled to carry out this year’s through a marvelous collaboration with Mystic Aquarium.”

“We are happy to be the presenting sponsor of SoundMusic this season, providing a bridge to what we hope will be a long and successful future for this cultural treasure,” said Dr. Stephen M. Coan, president and CEO of Sea Research Foundation. “This collaboration is mutually beneficial. We hope to bring SoundMusic new audiences for futures seasons, as well as show music aficionados the beauty of our aquarium and encourage them to visit.”

Tickets for each performance begin at $35 and go on sale May 21. For information or to purchase tickets, visit mysticaquarium.org or call (860) 572-5955, ext. 520. All ticket proceeds will benefit SoundMusic. Drinks and light fare created by Ocean Blue Catering, Mystic Aquarium’s exclusive on-site caterer, will be available for purchase at each performance.

Mystic Aquarium is also hosting a SoundMusic fundraiser on June 17 that will feature food, wine, music and an auction.

Aug 13    SoundMusic and Mystic Aquarium Announce Summer Collaboration

Stephen M.
